The term “chiropractic” comes from the Greek words “cheiro and praktikos”, which translates to “done by hand.” A chiropractor is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine (including the low back, mid-back, and neck). Chiropractic treatment is a branch of medicine that operates under the principle that every cell in our body is ultimately controlled by our nervous system and therefore interference in the nervous system caused by misaligned vertebrae in our spine can influence the health of your entire body. The misalignment of these vertebrae can cause irritation in the nerves. Subsequently, this leads to an alteration of the impulses from these nerves to all the muscles and organs throughout your body. The goal of chiropractic treatment is to detect and correct this nerve interference. This can help facilitate the body’s healing process from an injury.
A chiropractic adjustment (also referred to as chiropractic manipulation, spinal manipulation, and manual manipulation) is a type of treatment commonly performed to alleviate back and neck pain. It involves a chiropractor applying pressure to vertebrae (spinal bones) that are not functioning properly or are misaligned. Normally, a high-velocity, controlled thrust is applied to the spinal vertebrae, either with the use of the chiropractor’s hands or a small instrument (called an Activator). The goal of this treatment is to help decrease misalignment of the spinal vertebrae (known as subluxation), which can reduce pain, increase range of motion, and improve overall function. This treatment is highly effective in our patients that have injuries to their neck or back, including herniations (slipped discs) and radiculopathy (pinched nerve).
